To the Members of tl)e Ormsl{irk District Oddfellows, M.U.
SISTERS AND BRETHREN,
That years roll on and seasons return must every remain a true and familiar quotation, yet I Ca!). recall no more appropriate words to remind you and I that another year has come and gone, leaving in its train the responsibility of laying before you my seventeenth report of this important District of the great Manchester· Unity. · ,;i J1i 1 _
Administratively, the year 1913 has been an excessively busy one, and the thanks of the District arc due to Lodge Secretaries and other officials who have done good service in adding Btill further to ournumerical and financial prosperity.
SICKNESS EXPERIENCE.-Thc amount diRbursed in sickness claims is £2,748 9s. 7d., being £619 6s. 4d. in excess of the cost for th(l previous year. The sum paid is equivalent to 15s. 10.fcl. per member, or 3s. l0½d. more than Jast year. The average for the years, 1910-12, was l:1A. !lcl:, 13s. 2-½d. and 128. 0½d.
MoRT.A..LITY ExPERIENCE.-Funeral claims during 1913 in respect of members, members' wives, and widows, amounted to £594, as against £431 in :!,912, being equal to 3s. 4{-d. per head or llfd. in advance of the previous year.
FINANCIAL PostTION,-Notwithstanding that sickness and funeral cla.ims totalling £3,342 9s. 7d., have been paid, exceeding by £339 18s. 3d. the total contri butions received for these benefits, it is gratifying to record a year of successful financial work. Each lodge shows a gain varying in amounts from £24 8s. Id. in the "Horscar" Lodge to £242 12s. 5d. in the" Good Intent." The amount saved and added to capital is £1,393 12s. 5d., averaging 7s. ll½d, per member. 'fhe additions t-0 capital during the past five years, 1909-13, amounts to £8,607 13s. 2d. The funds of the Lodges now total £45,993 ls. lO½d, giving an average worth per member of £13 3s. ld. The contributions for benefits amount to £3,002 lls. 4d., being equal
to 17s. 5½d. per member, while the disbursements in sick and funeral benefits averaged 19s. 3½d. The receipts for interest on capital were £1,664 14s. 2½d., being equal to 9s. 6!d, per member.
JUVENILE SoclETY.-This useful branch contines to increuse both in members and funds. During the year nine members" crossed the bar." Funeral benefits paid amounted to £35 15s. 0d. 28 members were transferred to adult lodges, each carrying a bonus of five shillings towards future contributions. There has been a gratifying influ.,:: of new entrants, for, after allowing for deaths andseces ions, the returns show an increase of 61, bringing the membership up to 2,247. The funds stand at £1,415 8s. ld., having been augmented by £132 19s. 3d. It is on this branch that the future prosperity of our Society depends, therefore it becomes the duty of every brother and sister to use their influence upon the parents and guardiang of children to avail themselves of this inexpensive and advantageous class of in surance for their youngsters, when for fivepence per quarter, less than one halfpenny per week, they not only secure immediate and substantial monetary benefits, but a training of the children in habits of self-help and thrift. Officers on paying t,he Maternity Benefit under State Insurance should take care to secure the insurance of the child from its birth, and thus take it in Oddfellowship from the cradlet o the grave.
Wmows AND ORPHANS.-During the year grants amounting to £54 was paid to widows, while six orphans were in receipt of a weekly allowance. Considering the good work done on a subscription of only one penny per month it is regrettable to find a large number of our brethren not co-operating in what has been described as "the jem in the crown of Oddfellowship." The fund is in i healthy stat.-, having been increased by £78 0s. Id. during the year, the capital now standing at
£789 12s. 4d.
]'.EMA.LE I,ooolits. ::iubstantial progress 'is recorded, briefly justifying their establishment. A wider di scmination of the principles of Oddfellowship amongst the fairer sex is only necessary to ensure further prosperity to these branches.
UNITED LoDGES' lNVESTMENTS.-During,the year one mortgage has been repaid and othc1·s reclured to the amount•of £360, while' furthor securities totalling
£4,631 4s. 9d. have• been accepted. The funds dealt with now exceed £28,000. Lodges h,we been paid fou.r per cent. on amounts credited in last statement and 2} per cent. on deposits made during the year.
3n (}Y{emoriam.
Of the members whose deaths’du1·ing the year we have ha<l to regret, two may be singled out for spe;ial mention on account of the actin, part they played in Oddfellowship. I refer to I.P.G.M. Thomas Marsh and P.P.G.J\f. James Peach_
.81·0, Marsh had a record of long and faithful service and died in harness, the enconiums paid to his worth being richly deserved. Bro. Pe1ich, who had passed ” the allotted span,” had for a long numbers of years, even up to the last, devoted much time for the good of the cause. There is, therefore, no wonder that their deaths evoked general and sincere sympathy among the Brethren, a good number of whom attended the funerals to show respect for their memories and sympathy with the widows and children.·
Although the grave had claimed them for its own, And drath hath o’er them exercised his power,
1′:ll:ir actions are in our remembrance sown, Where they will bloom even to our latest hour.
THE UNrrL-1'hc financial returns for 1912 show that our Order still con tinues to improve its already fine position, having an increase in capital of £418,493 3s. 6d. Sickness and .Funeral Benefits paid amount to £1,101,547 3s. 6d., or
£39,645 2s. 0d. in excpss of the contributions received from the members, a further proof of the so1rnd interest earning power of the Society. The accumulated capital now exceeds £16,500,000.
STATE INSURANCE.-CompJaints are general throughout the country that com pulsory insurance is causing a big drain on the private funds of friendly societies, and the evidence of our ow11 sickness experience is only one example. 1’he attitude of many of the medical profession is deplorable. l\forc care in the granting of certificates is wanted and a better control over their patients, otherwise the restora tion of Medical Benefits to the Societies or .a State Medical Service will be necessary if friendly societies arc to continue. There is a gratifying increase in the number of persons taking their State Insurance through our Lodges, to whom we extend greeting and fraternal welcome_ In the lodge room theil- status is the same as that of the independent members. We know no distinction of rank, class, or creed. We solicit those eligible to join, to come and lend a helping hand to secure for the workers the manifold blessings·of prudence, thrift, and mutual protection.
” I know that life, upon the whole,
Is well worth all we have to give; And that the grander is the goal,
So much grander ’tis to live.”
Yours fraternally,
ROBERT GRAYSON, ‘PRov. C.S.
